That is exactly how I do my roving. I have the Schacht Finest and my diz is a prescription bottle top with a hole drilled in the middle. I like the results

That staple length sounds really suspicious. Angora just doesn't get that long from anything I've seen or read. I wonder if this is mohair and not angora?
