Erik, One thing we do have is sulfur in our raw well water, hence the need for the aerator before the softener. The sprayers release the sulfur and bad odor

Try pine straw if you have any available...I packed the top tank with it and it brought the ph down immediately. -Bill

Sounds like you found the problem. I have one warning about using well water directly from the well. I have heard that some well water will have dissolved

Yeah, I had the same problem when my system was new. Damned algae grew and grew raising the ph. I finally put a vinyl cover over my tank to keep the sun out.

I believe the shells are used for raising PH, not lowering as the dissolve below a 7.0 PH and then raise, from my reading anyway. John, Naples FL

I have used Muriatic acid before. I don't recall there being any problems. With fish in you need to go slowly whatever you do. Can you give more background
