The item that I thought was a diode is a .45 microfarad capasitor used for radio noise suppression.

Bolted to the top of my 91 vert's engine block is a small black device (diode?) with one wire going to it. It's size is approx. 3/4 x 5/8 x 1/2 inch thick.
